Fisherman Toph

Who would have thought… Christopher is really into fishing. It was totally a left field thing. I mentioned previously that we went fishing for the first time and he caught us dinner, but little did we know just the affect it would have on him. He was so proud and he apparently just really loved fishing. A quick recap:

Memorial day weekend arrives and we made sure we were ready. We brought all of our gear so the Tophster could get some fishing in. I honestly didn’t think he would do all that much fishing with all the other people around and all of the other things that could be done at the lake. I was wrong. Once he started there really wasn’t any stopping him.

Thankfully we did get other fun activities in:

Nearing the evening but before dinner he finally got some quality fishing time in.

Everyone is inside at this point and he is sitting there just waiting.

I honestly can’t remember if he caught anything Memorial day weekend but that didn’t discourage him. Beth finally put her mind in his and she figured out that he was hoping to catch 14 people enough fish to eat. When he was finally called in for dinner he said “sorry everyone” as if the weight of our meal rested on his shoulders. It was both a little comical and sad at the same time. Once he was eating he pretty much forgot about it, but that didn’t keep him from trying the next day, and that about summed up the Memorial day fish experience.

The next trip to the lake was a side trip to work on a boat trailer and to meet up with my folks. Topher didn’t like the idea of only spending a single night at the lake, he really would rather spend a nice long weekend there. I understand his sentiment, but how he felt about going in general was going to quickly change. While he felt forced into going this trip, I can pretty much guarantee he’ll be excited to go in the future, so long as a fishing pole is still at the lake house.

He spent the rest of his Saturday afternoon and evening fishing. We went out to dinner and the carp were rolling around in the canal. Toph was instantly ready to catch one. We tried to explain to him that they weren’t interested in eating but he was very hopeful. This short trip out was more eventful catching wise. He caught a couple sunnies and a rock bass. The rock bass escaped as soon as he was out of the water. Apparently Topher has just barely hooked him and one flop was all it took for the the fish to release itself. He was pretty bummed but at least mom got to see it.

On Sunday, we went to church and as soon as we got home after lunch he headed straight for the fishing poles. At some point we all decided we’d go for a boat ride. The water seemed calm enough that we headed for a longer ride. At the half way point Toph asked when we were headed back to the house because, as he put it, “I think my worm is going to dry out, it needs to go back in the water.” I could hardly believe that, even though he was having a blast on the boat ride, all he was thinking about was getting back to get some more fishing in.

I think he had a solid three hours of fishing and when it was finally time to head home he lamented that he “barely got any fishing in today.” I mean, I guess you fisherman understand his pain. Three hours in regular time is only like 45 minutes in fishing time.

We’re due to spend the week at the cottage come the first week of July. I wonder what Toph plans on doing?
